Hey Raj,

You're going to need a professional voice over artist for this project - so I suggest you take a look at this website; a number of UCA students have used artists from this site - and they've provided their services for free...

Okay yes please that would be nice, I’ve done a few small practise recording I’d like to try a few techniques out on but I have a problem with tracking shots and editing them as I have no programme to do it with right now ermm ...I bookmarked the voiceover site a while back so thanks for reminding me bout it shouldn’t be a problem located the right voice for my piece.

These Matchmoving videos are interesting. I've been planning to do some myself in the near future, definately inspirational.

Hey Raj (I've tried posting this twice, but got a message saying my comment was too long - but then they appeared anyway...confused! So I'm posting it in 2 halves...),

Okay - about your essay; first things first - it was very clear that you weren't really sure what the 'point' of your research was, or what you were trying to prove. You mention 'ideology' but don't define it, and the films you choose don't seem to support your argument. I have some very specific research topics that sit around the issues you seemed to interested in.

Both Children of Men and Metropolis are examples of sci-fi 'dystopias' - when the future is not better than now, but worse.

There is a big ideological debate around the idea of 'Utopia' - a utopia is a place where everything is perfect for everyone, and history is full of examples of people trying to create them (for instance, the Internationalist style of architecture, where architects tried to establish an architectural style that was 'universal' and so did away with 'difference' between people and cultures). The problem with Utopias, of course, is that principle idea of something being 'perfect' for everyone: who decides what is perfect for everyone? Utopias have a dark side - for instance, Hitler's view of a perfect race...

Part 2!

Science Fiction/horror famously explore the tension between Utopia/dystopia; Metropolis absolutely shows this, what with the city above and the workers below. Movies like The Terminator, The Matrix show worlds in which technology (which is a synonym for utopia because technology is supposed to free mankind and make us better) has enslaved mankind and made us into victims; movies like the original Stepford Wives and The Truman Show are also critiques of utopias... Utopias often end up as fascist regimes for obvious reasons.

I think you need to start your dissertation research by researching 'A History of Utopias' - (which is a history of ideologies fashioned into physical spaces and civilisations). I suggest you get started; You also want to research depictions of Utopia/dystopias in film, art and literature; prepare for some serious theoretical stuff - why? Because Utopias are connected to Modernism and cynicism about Utopias (i.e. are they even achievable?) is connected to Postmodernism.

Choose Utopias and you've got an 8,000 word dissertation easy... :-)

Hi Raj - I've emailed the techies, but they're on annual leave: they'll get the email from me upon their return, and I'll let you know the outcome. If you've decided on that poem, I suggest you start storyboarding right now and posting an animatic asap...

Evening Phil

Alright thanks for that.
Yeah I’ve made my decision and going for the poem I feel it’s strong enough to work with, my only concern is would it be enough for a minor project should I think outside the box a little and bring a story into it and more elements?
