Tutorial session

The tutorial session was a time to express the ideas that where on offer some superior to others had been detailed more but my main focus was to share the ninja E4 concept making sure it was the right idea to go for.

I had received the thumbs up for it as the combination of the idea works with the sound. However some slight changes had also been issued Alan had suggested figuring out a solution to the sting how it should start? How should it conclude? After more chit chat my idea had become clear, now I shall prepare and characterise the E4 with influence from the marital arts period in this case the 60s 70s kind of era where a rise in combat fighting ‘ninja’ movies where brewing. Thinking about the 3 act story structure the most important part is the end in my case. The interior will no longer be a dojo the reason for this change is that a narrative can not be expressed. The animation shall now take place in a bedroom scene with notifications that tie in with the E4 programme indications such as colour and perhaps E4 wallpaper and so on. Another detail picked up on previously the comical factor will be displayed in my idea having the martial arts film genre influence as the main focal point. Camera movement will be considered from the research to highlight the word ‘comedy’.

I’ll look to run some tests and preparation over the next few days things like the movement of the E4 itself whether to use a rig or just alternatively deformers which would save time is an issue I can address, the design features along with a storyboard and other important factors to bring the project together as one. The brief requires a ‘making of’ document so this would be a nice chance for me to compile some development and the technical aspects of the project.

Dojo matte painting

Elaborating on one of my ideas that work well with my sound option I had started a concept matte painting. As I was set on the ‘ninja’ emphasis to the idea the perfect place for my animation to take place initially was a dojo and began to form an environmental piece. Using reference pictures and photographs allocated from the internet. The reasoning behind this piece was to get a sense of the colouration im looking for whilst thinking about the surroundings which would in turn affect things like the light source from the outside for example. I am looking to work within an interior setting hence the selection of a dojo. The previous project being an exterior environment was a challenge well dealt with now I’d like to see if similar if not better results can be achieved.

Initial sketches

In the past it’s been apparent that ideas and the direct path in which to take a project has taken time to Digest, what I’d like to do now is exploit the areas of exportation and address some of the potential choices starting off with some very basic sketches also initial thoughts. On in this page I have outlined 7 ideas that have been lurking around perhaps one of these will work for me maybe can be used in a certain way although for another occasion.

Listening to the sound beds that have been given I have made my choice on the particular sounds I am going to base my project around. The sound has a kind of oriental tranquil western style of influence to it. This therefore targets one of my ideas in particular which ties in nicely.

1. The first idea has a kind of party atmosphere to it, it is essentially a huge E4 house with reference to smaller E4’s living there.

2. The second sketch indicates the E4 model with a certain level of characteristic. I’m interested in forming a strong visual identification of the logo itself in its own form. From many of the estings that I have seen I’ve become aware of a trend in the 2d element so as a result in order to create something different from the rest I shall embrace this assignment with a wide range of 3d elements.

3. The third idea shown is a simple love scene associating the E4 symbols in love.

4. The forth idea illustrates something that has been done before and show similarities to previous works however if I was to pursue this idea a strong use of a particular aesthetic would be applied changing it appearance.

5. The fifth design showcases the use of the word ‘ninja’ using the second idea to influence this one the characterization of the E4 would be well-built in the animation in the sense that the audience would be amazed. When listening to the sound choice and the description given it becomes clear with this idea the puzzle pieces are beginning to fit so to speak.

6. The sixth idea is a simple drawn 2d animation a guy with a flying E4 kite.

7. The seventh proposal is something small but effective having influence from advertising such the bubbles used by the mobile phone company O2 and various others I’ve prepared a concept below for this idea.

The initial intention was to create a character for this project allowing me to enhance my character modelling skills further, this would be a strong base with this unit to develop around although this isn’t a 15 or 10 week project time needs to be taken in account so I’ll have to put a hold on this for the time being and consider it over the holidays.

To begin the foundation of this unit I’m going to explore what E4 is about and detail specifics about them in addition.

E4 is part of the channel 4 Television Corporation broadcasted in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland, launched in 2001 and the programme contains a wide range of ‘entertainment’ which relate to the ‘E’ in the title of the programme. The target audience is mainly aimed at 15 to 35 year olds, some of the popular shows being televised include series from the U.S.


More and More the programme had drawn in viewers as the rise of its popularities continues, a change in 2005 allowed the programme to become available on Freeview this in turn increased advertising revenues attracting larger audiences.

The clip welcoming E4 viewers contains a comical factor and in some sense I have noticed this considerably in terms of the nature E4 emits through advertising the estings and other aspects. Thinking about the route in which the project will follow my speculation will be taken note of. The word ‘comedy’ may be the key to my sting.
